Sprung is a curtain made out of uncurled and re-curled wood shavings. The idea was to explore that unconventional ways that typical materials could be used. Sprung includes five different types of wood: poplar, birch, pine, rose and mahogany. The curtain itself stands 5’ by 14’ feet tall.
DESIGN FOREVER The 2015 WantedDesign Design Schools Workshop invited students to think about the lives of objects. In other words to design with the idea that what is being made will last forever.
A minimal surface is a surface that locally minimizes its areas. Creating these forms almost at random is not terribly complicated. Yet, translating a precise, organic design such as this, from digital to analogue proved to be slightly more difficult. Today, we rely heavily on the abilities of 3D printers and other making devices to figure it out for us. I wanted to created a large scale version of my own digital design using nothing but five MDF mounts and surran wrap. The whole piece stood for a month and spanned about 8’ by 20’.
